Three rings of light hold together although no two of them are linked; take one away and the other two fall apart. These are the Borromean rings, drawn as a figure of the Trinity in a thirteenth-century manuscript from Chartres. Three voices sing an original round on the Agnus Dei, one phrase apart, and every chord is shared out one note to each voice, so that no two voices can complete it without the third. Touch a ring to silence its voice: it sinks back into ink, the harmony opens and the other two drift apart; touch it again and they close.

Three rings, no two of them linked, hold together only as three: the Borromean rings, an old figure of the Trinity. Three voices sing a round on the Agnus Dei, and each chord needs all three. Touch a ring to silence its voice and watch the other two drift apart.
