The Ringing Earth
La Terre sonne
Ugo Parsi — numeric-art.com, 2026WebGL2, Web Audio — real-time normal-mode synthesis from the PREM Earth model, with a synthesised choir and strings
After a great earthquake the whole planet rings like a struck bell, in free oscillations that last for days; since 1998 we have known it is never silent: a faint hum, now known to be sustained by the ocean. Every bell here is one of those normal modes, computed from the PREM Earth model and raised eighteen octaves, decaying at its true relative rate; and each bell you hear is the planet visibly ringing in that mode’s shape. The two gravest, 0S2 and 0S3, lie almost a perfect fifth apart, an E and a B: the choir and strings sing in that key, tuned to 0S2. Earthquakes from the real catalogue — or the one you set off — strike them from their place and depth: surface waves circle the globe and meet again at the antipode, and in the cut-away P and S wavefronts bend through mantle and core. Each wave that reaches your station ▲ rings the bells and opens a phrase; a great earthquake brings the whole choir.
The bells are the Earth’s own vibrations, raised eighteen octaves, and each one you hear is the planet visibly ringing in its shape; the choir sings in the key of the two gravest.
